99% of the patents issued are never commercialized
One study in the consumer found that only 25 out of 500 product ideas are deemed worthy of test marketing. Only one-third of those products tested are subsequently launched nationally. And out of these, only one is likely to remain profitably on the market after 10 years. Another study of fast moving consumer innovations concluded 45 to 65 percent of test marketed products fail while in test, and between 10 and 20 percent of those that survive test marketing fail at the national level. Industrial products typically fair better in the marketplace primarily because of the scrutiny new ideas receive before being developed.
